LIFE IN THE TIME OF SOCIAL MEDIA
Over
the years, expressing one’s self has changed drastically. Our opinions if
powerful have enough decibels to travel across continents with the click of a
button. Social media, may it be Facebook, Instagram or whatsoever, have become
a platform the outflow of thoughts, and it looks like everyone is a writer,
thinker or a philosopher. That forms a section of this elite platform, a stage
for social campaigns as well. The verbal abuses and the controversies that boil
after a post or a public comment don’t make it very elite. Looks like everyone
out there has an opinion even for the most negligible matter that has been
posted.
But
flipping around, the importance that some issues gain is commendable otherwise
which it wouldn’t have attained. So thumbs up to those likes, shares and effort
put in to create such posts and videos.
It’s
not just the youth alone but also the middle age group who are active users of
social media. The yet glued to the four corners of the screen as they are still
in their cyber adolescence. It’s more of an amusement rather than their urge to
be noticed. It’s mainly those viral videos, their long lost friends whom they
can be in contact with. So friendships relapse for a generation who has never
dreamt of being reunited after they got married or transferred to a new place.
This seem weird to the current generation who has Whatsapp groups from their
primary classes, so there’s no question of having a long lost friend.
These
are all the perks of being active in the virtual world. But the perils those
hang in and around are countless. Being virtual in every emotion of one’s life
becomes intolerable and senseless. For instance, posting on the first birthday
of your child on how much you lobe him, what he means to you and what not! For
heaven sake, it is your child, you love him/her, he/she means world to you,
they define you so on and so forth. But it’s not just for you but also for
every father and mother, period. It’s either this or you, yourself, your dog
it’s poop, the filters, the hourly updates.
May
be what I sense and perceive is not right. May be that is the essence of these
platforms. To break the limits of privacy. If they don’t mind why should I?
Theirs is so much happening around you when you are drowning in this well of
somebody else’s life and dreams. You don’t seem happy thinking what makes them
so glad. Focus, prioritize and think
before you like share and subscribe.
